Lets talk Collagen.

I just wanted to take some time to answer some questions I get about the collagen supplements I take. I am a proud partner of Vital Proteins, and here are some reasons why! I  know you all have seen me add it to my coffee in the morning, but I  wanted to highlight a few of my other favorite products and give you some everyday uses for them!

Q: What is Collagen?
A: According to the World Wide Web & vitalproteins.com, Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies, that gives structure to our hair, skin, nails, bones, tendons, and the ligaments in our bodies! Collagen is a protein made up of amino-acids: glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine, all of which help our body’s connective tissue, skin, hair, nails, as well as gut health stay as healthy as possible.

Q: Is Collagen Protein the same as Whey Protein?
A: No. Collagen protein is different than whey and casein protein because of these high levels of amino acids. Muscular growth, joint health and an overall glowing appearance can be partially attributed to the amino acid blend in collagen that can’t be found anywhere else. BUT, for bariatric patients, like myself, I use their line of Collagen Whey which incorporates Whey Protein & Collagen Protein, helping us reach our protein goals, with a clean ingredient list! As Bariatric patients, we absorb everything differently, and plain collagen isn’t absorbed as a protein source, but as the above mentioned amino acid profile, but when it is combined with whey, it is absorbed as both the amino acid profile AND a source of countable protein. I asked my personal nutritionist and a friend who is a Bariatric nutritionist and both were impressed with the collagen whey properties! Make sure you always check with your personal nutritionist before moving forward with a new supplement!

Q: How do you make your coffee?
A: I’m linking the cold brew method, here, but usually I blend 1.5 cups of low acid cold brew with 1/2 cup almond milk, and 2 scoops of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides, or Collagen Whey. I like to pour it over ice to a happy song, and sprinkle with a ton of pumpkin pie spice. Something about the ritual makes me so happy and thankful to start the day. Does that make sense? It’s one of my favorite things ever, it always feels like such a treat!

Q: Do you use the supplements as meal replacement?
A: No. I don’t replace meals. I eat when I’m hungry, and a cup of collagen coffee is just how I start my morning. I include the collagen peptides in a post workout shake for recovery, too! Thats just it, they are supplements, that supplement a balanced diet. I don’t count calories or macros, I just try to envision a meal in a few brackets- protein, carb, fat, & lots of veggies, please!

Q: What made you switch to Vital Proteins after taking Syntrax for so long?
A: As I’ve grown on this journey, finding what works best for me, my mind, my body, etc, I realized that it wasn’t about fitting foods into a calorie mold, but an ingredient mold. When it came down to it, I was finding myself leaving long processed ingredient lists (with fewer calories) behind, to reach for more sustainable lists, “cleaner” lists, things I  can understand and pronounce. I liked the way Syntrax tasted as a fresh post-op bariatric patient, but after making the switch to Vital Proteins, I noticed a BIG difference, not only in my hair, skin, nails, but also in the way my stomach felt, and my digestion was getting easier! I know looking at the price differences, it’s quite the difference, but in the end, spending more on quality ingredients keeps us from being sick more often, keeps us out of the doctors office, and truly- you get what you pay for. I am 100% happy with my switch and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Q:What are your favorites?
A: The unflavored collagen peptides is the best thing, colorless, odorless, flavorless, and dissolves well into any liquid, but here are three of my top choices, and how I use them daily!

Collagen Whey Protein
Like I mentioned before, I use this protein supplement to reach my bariatric protein goals, and also to maintain my weight. The Vanilla flavor is so good in iced coffee, great to bake with, or mix into smoothies. The main ingredient is real vanilla bean, and you can see all the little black flecks running through the powder! It’s real vanilla, and that is so impressive!  I also love their banana flavor, which I make my dark chocolate collagen cups with, and the cocoa flavor is SO GOOD, if you like dark chocolate!

Smoothie// Blend 1 cup almond milk with 1 frozen banana, 1 tablespoon nut butter, 2 scoops Vital Proteins Collagen Whey, and a handful of ice cubes. Get a big straw because that bad boy is gonna be thiiiiiiick.

Matcha Collagen
This might be my favorite product of 2017. I  got to try this with the collagen coffee creamer at Expo East earlier this year, and waiting for them both to be released was serious torture!  The Vital Proteins Matcha Collagen tube is small enough to travel with, and blends perfectly into hot or cold liquids. It is VIBRANT GREEN telling us the matcha is super high quality! I love this stuff. I  used it to make matcha collagen cups, and you can find the recipe here on my instagram.

Bone Broth Collagen.
I  don’t know about you all, but I am the type of person to use 1 cup of boxed broth, and then it sits in my fridge for too long, and I have to throw the rest out. This powdered collagen broth is SO GOOD. The flavor is incredible, and I  cook with it all the time, adding it to soups, crock pot meals, cooking my quinoa in it, and just drinking it warm in a mug. I’ve had this container for 3 months now, and I’m just a little over half way through it. I think it’s an incredible pantry staple, and cannot wait to try the beef flavor next!

Crock Pot Bone Broth Chicken// place 4 chicken breasts in crock pot, and season liberally with garlic powder, sea salt, pepper, and 2 scoops of Vital Proteins Bone Broth Collagen. Add 1/4 cup water and cook on low for 4 hours. Shred and add more broth for soup, or save for salads, tacos, and anything else throughout the week!
